Vejer de la Frontera

Just one hour to the south of Rota, the city of Vejer de la Frontera is a beautiful day trip.  From this whitewashed, hilltop town you can enjoy sweeping views of open countryside, the Atlantic Ocean, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Africa.

Narrow, hilly, cobbled streets and pedestrian pathways snake through the old town and offer sneak peeks into private patio oases filled with flowers.  The influence of the Moors, who ruled Vejer for 5 centuries, can be seen in the architecture, and tasted in the Moroccan-inspired food at el Jardin del Califa restuarante.

Reservations are recommended at this amazing restuarant...great food, and a very cool atmosphere from outdoor dining to inside tables in almost a cave-like setting.

I can't believe it took me almost two years of living in Spain before I finally made it to Vejer--take it from me and don't wait that long!  It's a super easy getaway that feels like a real vacation.
