Let me just start by saying that I really love all things food...I love to talk about good food, read about good food, cook good food, watch other people cook good food...you get the idea. So, I'm sorry to say one of my biggest disappointments about living in Spain is that I just don't really like Spanish food overall...(muffled gasp from cyberspace).
Now just hold on a minute before you go judging me...I already know it's a terrible thing to say about my new home country, much less to post on a public site...and I mean no offense to those who really enjoy Spanish food, but for me, I just really miss the variety of restaurants and types of food that were readily available in the States. The fact that this is also a relatively small city (compared with Madrid or Barcelona, for example) also limits the options for places to dine out, especially when craving non-Spanish food.
There are a few Spanish dishes I've discovered that I really love, and I've tried to re-create some of these at home--I love my own, simple homemade versions of them even more! Check the categories list at the right for these "Spanish Favorites", and other yummy dishes! On the upside, rarely eating out has forced me a little out of my box to try to find new things to make, and maybe replicate some of the foods we miss from home.
One thing southern Spain does have is an amazing variety of fresh seafood...there are so many kinds of delicious fish to choose from at the market, it's overwhelming at times. Also the local mercados (markets) offer a wide variety of delicious fruits and veggies to incorporate into daily meals. Fresh produce from the markets is great, but eat it right away because it spoils much faster that what we are used to in the States...but fewer preservatives is a good thing!
One of my all-time favorite things to make and eat is breakfast! There's nothing like a lazy Saturday morning with nowhere to be and time to linger over coffee and a delicious breakfast/brunch! I have a couple of weekend favorites. Weeknight meals at our house need to be fast, easy, and appealing to two busy kids and a hungry husband...I have a few go-tos that are always a hit. Check out the categories at the right for ideas, and share your own inspirations, too!
